PSD is a popular format for storing multi-layered images created or edited using Photoshop software. The main advantage of using the PSD extension is that images remain easily editable, as their layered structure allows users to add or change various elements and features, including image effects, transparencies, color adjustments and many more.

To increase accessibility and ease of transfer, PSD files are usually converted to more widely used raster formats, such as JPEG or PNG. This type of conversion, though, implies flattening the image, which means no major editing is possible afterwards. And this might pose problems at times.

The hassle of realizing you still need to make corrections to a PSD image that has already been flattened can be easily avoided by converting to SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) in the first place. This extension allows you to preserve the image layers and defines the graphics in XML format. SVG also supports animation and lets you index, search or compress the image.

Converting multi-layered PSD files to multi-layered SVG can be done in no more than a few clicks using reaConverter’s latest edition.

DWG is a proprietary format of AutoCAD — probably the most popular software for drafting 2D and 3D models in the construction industry. Widely used by engineers, architects, designers and other professionals in this branch, the DWG extension is also compatible with several other computer-aided design programs, including IntelliCAD or Caddie.

Most CAD programs offer users 2 types of drafting environments. One is “model space”, where a draft model is initially sketched according to a defined representation scale, and the other is “paper space”, to which users can switch to when preparing a model for printing. The latter allows you to create several layouts, offering different views of the model. Multipage DWG files can contain both “model” pages and “paper” pages.

For easier access, storing and transferring options, DWG files will often be converted to PDFs. reaConverter’s latest edition not only allows you to process this conversion fast and easy, but also to customize the conversion of multipage DWGs to multipage PDFs, by picking one of the 3 available options: all layouts, only model space or only paper space. The feature is also available for the DXF format, which represents DWG’s interchange version, and can be operated from command-line as well.

Install reaConverter

This software can also help save a lot of time and effort by avoiding repetitive operations. Here is how to convert batch of multipage DWG images into multipage PDF documents:

Load DWG Images

Select all the multipage DWG or DXF vector files you intend to convert and drop them into the reaConverter window. You can also use the Add files button and opt for the Advanced file select option, which allows you to pick a particular type of extension only, from a source folder containing several others.

Loading Settings

Go to the Menu button and click Loading settings → Vector formats loading settings.

Here you can tick one of the available options for the multipage DWG or DXF output layout. reaConverter allows you to process all pages (all layouts), only “model” pages (model space) or only “paper” pages (all paper spaces).

Multipage Saving Settings

Go to the Menu button, click Saving settings → Multipage files…

Click Convert each multipage file to another if you want to create a multipage PDFs.

Choose PDF as Output Format

In the Saving options tab, decide where you will store the resulting images. You can use one of the available destination options — source folder, subfolders, a customized folder.

Finally, pick PDF as an output extension from the buttons placed in the lower part of the window.

PDF Settings

You can also set PDF specific settings from Menu → Saving settings → Format saving settings menu. PDF Security Settings section allows you to enter a password for opening the output PDF files and one for allowing various actions applied to it — printing, editing or copying. When you’re done, don’t forget to click OK to save your options.

Start Conversion

Then simply press Start, sit back and wait for your new multipage PDFs to be ready!

Developers can include this feature when creating a customized software solution by operating it via command-line, using the following code line:

Though they apparently have a similar function, the two differ on several aspects, such as size and image quality.

JPEG or JPG is the format typically used by most non-professional digital cameras to shoot photographs. So it is definitely the most wide-spread extension you will find photos in.

The advantages of JPEGs are size — which tends to be small, and transferability — which means you can easily store and e-mail such files. Also, most browsers do not require special applications or plug-ins for viewing JPEGs, and this format is compatible with all photo sharing websites. Hence, if you are interested more in easily uploading your files on Internet and care about how much space they take on your computer, than JPEG is what you need.

If, on the other hand, you care more about the quality of your image, especially in case you plan to print it, you might prefer the TIFF format. While JPEGs provide a “lossy” compression of the image, which translates in a lower image quality, TIFFs (Tagged Image File Format) can ensure a “lossless” compression, or in other words reproduce the photographed/scanned image with more accuracy. This means that TIFFs tend to be larger in size, but will also look a lot better when printed than JPEGs.

Another important difference between TIFFs and JPEGs is that the former support a multi-page format, whereas the latter does not. So, if you happen to have a multi-page TIFF that you want to convert to multiple JPEG files, here is the fast and easy way to do it:

Download reaConverter Lite

Download and install reaConverter Lite, a quality piece of software that supports conversions from TIF to JPG in batch mode. You will notice it does not take too much space on your computer, it has a user-friendly interface and is available for free.

Install reaConverter Lite

Load Multipage TIFF Images

Load all the TIFF files you need to convert. As opposed to most free online converters, reaConverter supports batch conversion, which means you will not have to do the same operations over and over again, thus saving time and energy.

Use Multipage Settings

Select multi-page loading options from Menu → Loading settings, if you want to convert all the pages from the multipage TIFF, or just some of them.

Apply Image Editing

Optionally, you can select editing actions you want to apply to your images from Edit images tab. Resizing, rotating, cropping and watermarking are just some of the available options. All editing will be applied to every TIFF page you convert.

Save the Result

Go to Saving options tab to select the destination folder and the JPG as output format of the converted files.

Then Start the conversion and enjoy your new separate JPEG images!

Many graphic designers prefer to use the PSD (Photoshop Document) extension when creating and editing images because of its multiple advantages. A proprietary format for Adobe Photoshop, PSD can store files with multiple layers, provides lossless compression and helps users handle a wide variety of advanced drawing options.

However, PSD files tend to get very large in size, which makes them difficult to store and transfer. Plus, they are compatible with very few other programs apart from Adobe Photoshop. For this reason, most designers prefer to convert PSD files to more accessible extensions — such as JPEG or PNG — once they are done with editing them.

While converting PSD files usually implies flattening the image and losing the chance to edit layers in the future, with reaConverter you can now get more options for preserving layer data. How? By saving each layer separately.

reaConverter now includes separate options for loading PSDs as merged images or as separate layers, as well as multi-page saving options that allow saving each layer in a separate file.

How to convert multilayered PSD images using reaConverter?

Install reaConverter

Load one or more PSD files into reaConverter. You can use the handy drag-and-drop tool or search them manually in your hard-drive.

Go to the Menu button, and then Loading settings → PSD loading settings.

Here you can tick one of the two options available: loading PSD files as merged images or as separate layers.

If you want to save each layer separately, go to Menu → Saving settings → Additional saving settings and check the Multipage tab. Here you can also opt for saving the multilayered image into another multipage format, such as TIFF. This way you also preserve all layers on separate pages.

In the Edit images tab, you can apply several types of editing options, including resizing, rotating, watermarking and more.

Finally, go to the Saving options section and pick the location of the output images. Here you should also choose their format, by clicking one of the buttons placed in the lower part of the window.

Then simply click Start and the new images will soon be ready.
