EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a vector format used for storing images and drawings. Such files can contain maps, logos or detailed layouts and can include both vector and bitmap data. Compared to the similar PS format, EPS not only uses the PostScript language to describe graphics, but also stores an “encapsulated” preview of low-resolution, that can be displayed by some programs.

Creating EPS files usually requires advanced graphics software, such as Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw. But with reaConverter’s latest edition, it can also be done through conversion, in no more than a few clicks. This powerful software can read over 600 image formats, including vector, 3D and CAD extensions. Such formats can now be easily converted into EPS with preview, helping users catch a glimpse of the image content via a TIF thumbnail supported by some software and plug-ins.

EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a vector graphics format particularly associated with Adobe Illustrator, but also compatible with other graphics design software, such as Corel Draw. The format uses the PostScript page description language and includes or “encapsulates” a low-resolution preview, which can be displayed by some programs.

Printing EPS files requires a machine which supports PostScript. For best results in terms of rendering colors and shapes from screen to paper, EPS images should be converted to CMYK color space before printing. In other words, the combination of colors used for representing the image should be changed from the primary colors of light — Red-Green-Blue (RGB), which is typical for TVs, computers and other types of backlit monitors — to the primary colors of pigment — Cyan-Magenta-Yellow and Key/Black, which is more suitable for the printed paper.

Converting to CMYK before printing allows you to preserve the image’s natural brightness and make sure the colors you see on screen match the ones you will find on paper. While some people think that converting to CMYK requires an advanced graphics editor, such as Corel Draw, Quark Express or Adobe Photoshop, with reaConverter you can handle the process in no more than 3 easy steps.

In case you have to deal with large quantities of images of various formats, reaConverter helps you save time using the Advanced file select option, by which you can automatically select all EPS files from a folder that includes several other extensions as well.

Image editing

Many of them allow you to use reaConverter as an advanced graphics editor, facilitating color adjustment, cropping, resizing or stylizing options — to name just a few!

The effect of these changes can be checked in real time if you tick the Preview box in the upper right side of the window.

Start conversion

In the Saving options section, decide where and how you want to save the output EPS images. reaConverter allows you to save in the source folder, a subfolder or another location of your choice.

Finally, click on the EPS button on the lower part of the window to set the extension of the output files. Then move the pointer on the button and click the Settings icon, placed on its upper left side.

You can also reach this location by following this path: Menu → Saving settings → Format saving settings. In the new window, tick Save EPS/PS in CMYK color space.

“I am looking for a tool to open EPS images from a webpage and save them as JPEGs to another location. Can reaConverter help me do this?”

One of our users recently sent us this question, so we passed it on to Alexander Korostelev from reaConverter, together with a few other questions regarding the use of a converter through a command-line interface.

Here is the interview that resulted:

Q: Can you run ReaConverter through a command-line interface in order to convert EPS images?

A: Yes, any advanced user can run ReaConverter from his application or webpage using the command-line interface. Running through command-line is an advanced feature available with ReaConverter Pro – a piece of software intended mainly for developers, image designers or other types of users who do image processing professionally. Command-line is usually preferred by advanced computer users because it allows them to have more control over a program or an operating system. Using command-line basically means writing lines of text or “command lines” which instruct the computer program to undertake certain processes. This is slightly more difficult than issuing commands using your mouse, as one does on a GUI (graphical user interface) operating system, so this is why we recommend using command-line only for advanced users.

Q: Why use the command-line feature?

A: Because you save a lot of time and generally increase your productivity. Command-line allows you to write commands that help you automate and manage more efficiently a whole range of reoccurring operations related to applying digital editing to your images. It also makes your job a lot easier if you have images stored on several computers. It is certainly the best option for the advanced user who plans to convert EPS images from a webpage and wants to have the output files saved in a different location. Generally speaking, using the command-line interface allows you to work faster, reduce errors and handle images more easily.

Q: How do you use the command-line feature to convert an EPS image?

A: Firstly, you need to download and install ReaConverter Pro, which can be tried for free at reaconverter.com. This program supports command-line conversion and image processing for over 400 image formats, including Encapsulated PostScript or EPS files. Secondly, you will use ReaConverter’s command-line tool, cons_rcp.exe, which will allow you to do conversions and image editing either from the command-line, command (batch) files or by using third party applications. A comprehensive list of instructions about how to use this tool, together with a list of parameters, is available here.

We recently received this question from a ReaConverter user who tried to convert a PDF document into an AI (Adobe Illustrator) image format and was slightly puzzled by a message that popped up before conversion, saying GhostScript is required. He also mentioned a GhostScript driver was already installed on his computer, so he couldn’t figure out why the conversion wouldn’t work.

If you’re a non-techie and have not come across such messages before, GhostScript might seem to be part of a foreign language. So here is why I have put up a short “translation” – a quick review of what this package of software is, as well as when you might need it and how to use it with ReaConverter.

GhostScript is a bundle of software that functions as an interpreter to PostScript and PDF files. Installing it allows you to view such files and print them on printers that otherwise can’t read PostScript files.

ReaConverter allows regular PDF and AI conversions to JPG or other raster formats. Moreover, it supports vector to vector conversion of PostScript files, which can be used when you convert files such PDF, EPS, AI, PS and EPI in PostScript format. This feature implies a direct conversion, which means input files can’t be edited and the loading settings do not influence the conversion.

Though ReaConverter does not require additional software for converting PostScript files, when you want to convert such files into PostScript format, you will need to have the GhostScript driver installed. This is quick and easy to do from this location: http://www.reasoft.com/downloads/ghostscript.exe. You should download and install it from this address even if you might have installed GhostScript in the past on your computer, because ReaConverter does not work with other GhostScript drivers.

So, going back to the question from the title of this post, the answer is the following: You don’t need a Ghostscript driver installed when you use ReaConverter for converting files such as AI, EPS, PS or PDF. A designated version of GhostScript is only required if you want to save your output files in PostScript format.

Download and try reaConverter (~30 MiB)

Advanced users can do the same using command line utility in manual, automated or scheduled mode. You are welcome to contact our technical support when you have any questions about reaConverter.
